7 Red Flags to Watch Out For When Booking Your Wedding Band 🚩

So, you’ve secured the venue, the dress is being sorted, and now it’s time for the most important part of the evening: The Party. 🚀
Live music makes or breaks a wedding. We’ve seen it time and time again over our 10 years in the industry. But here is the truth: the wedding industry is flooded with options, and not all of them are created equal.
Lately, we’ve seen a huge influx of "Entertainment Agencies" popping up. While some are great, many are just middlemen taking a 20-30% cut of your budget, often sending you bands they have never even met in person!
Many of the bands have never actually played a high profile event or a wedding! (The agency doesn't care, they get their cut!) Let that sink in…
At Electric Ocean, we believe in sovereignty. When you book us, you get us. No middlemen, no "mystery musicians," and direct communication from day one.
To help you navigate the noise, here are 7 Red Flags to watch out for when hiring your wedding entertainment.
1. No Live Video Evidence 📹
Anyone can sound good in a recording studio with enough auto-tune. The real test is: Can they do it live?
A major red flag is a band that only has "music video" style promo with the studio track dubbed over the top. You need to see raw, live footage. You need to hear the actual vocals and see the crowd reaction.
The Electric Ocean Standard: We pride ourselves on our live energy. We don’t hide behind edits. Check out our video section to see exactly what an Electric Ocean party looks like (sweaty dance floors included).

2. The "Digital Ghost" (No Website) 👻
Let’s start with the basics. If a band doesn't have a professional website in 2026, run.
A Facebook page or an Instagram handle isn't enough. A website is a band's shop window. It shows they are professional, invested in their business, and take their reputation seriously. If you are looking at a local pub band that has no online footprint, ask yourself: can they handle the logistics of a tightly scheduled wedding timeline?
The Electric Ocean Standard: Our website is our HQ. It’s where you see who we are, what we do, and exactly what you’re paying for.
3. Zero Social Proof (No Reviews) ⭐
This is the big one. In the age of Google, there is nowhere to hide.
If a band has been "going for years" but has zero reviews on Google or Facebook, something is wrong. Reviews are the lifeblood of the wedding industry. They are the only way to know if a band is actually reliable, polite, and talented.
The Electric Ocean Standard: We don’t just claim to be good; we have hundreds of 5-Star Google Verified Reviews to back it up. We are one of Essex’s most trusted bands because we deliver, every single time.
4. No Contract? No Deal. 📝
This is a non-negotiable. A professional wedding supplier—whether it’s the florist, the venue, or the band—will always issue a contract.
A contract protects you. It ensures the band turns up, plays the agreed times, and doesn't swap out their lead singer for "Dave from down the road" at the last minute. If a band tries to keep it casual with a "handshake agreement," you have zero security.
The Electric Ocean Standard: We use comprehensive contracts for every single booking. It gives you total peace of mind so you can focus on planning the fun stuff.
5. The "Radio Silence" (Poor Communication) 📵
You send an email enquiry... and wait. Three days pass. Then a week.
If a band is slow to reply when they are trying to get your money, imagine what they’ll be like once they have it.
The Agency Issue: This is often where agencies fail. You ask a question, the agent emails the band, the band replies to the agent, the agent replies to you. It’s a game of Chinese Whispers. When you book direct with Electric Ocean, you have a direct line to us. We aim to reply to all couples within 24-48 hours.
6. They Hide Their Repertoire 🙈
A band should be proud of their setlist! If a band can't show you a sample repertoire or gets defensive when you ask about song choices, be wary.
While you should trust your band to read the room (it’s what we do best), you should absolutely know if their style matches yours. If you want UK Garage and Indie anthems, and they only play 60s rock 'n' roll, it’s going to be a long night.
The Electric Ocean Standard: We have a massive repertoire of bangers, from Dizzee Rascal to Oasis. We work with you to curate the vibe. Click here to see the list.
7. The "Too Good To Be True" Price 💸
We get it, weddings are expensive. But the old saying is true: If you pay peanuts, you get monkeys. (Or, more likely, a band that cancels on you two days before).
If a 4 or 5-piece band is quoting you £800 for the night, do the maths. After travel, equipment insurance, PAT testing, and rehearsal time, they are working for pennies. This usually implies they are amateurs or hobbyists.
Professional musicians charge professional rates because we bring professional gear, backup plans, and 10 years of floor-filling experience.
The Bottom Line: Cut Out The Middleman
Agencies have their place, but why pay extra commission for a band you’ve never spoken to?
At Electric Ocean, we are proud to be an independent, self-managed band. We handle our own bookings, we answer our own emails, and we rock our own shows.
